Mirapex, hope this can help some of you with ED

Posting this info here FWIW. It's long but to make a long long story short, Mirapex
(yes, the Parkinson's drug that you heard causes pathological gambling) seems to have
cured my ED.

The backstory.

I was diagnosed with Hypogonadism at age 30. My Total Testosterone was 180, free and
bound were both one or two points about the lowest 'normal' level. I was depressed, had
ED, had constant fatigue. My Doc also found a Prolactin level for 50. Not enough to
bring my Test down and give me problems, he said. In any case, he put me on Testosterone
injections. (Patches sloughed off in the heat and I was allergic to the adhesive, and
Androgel, well, I had to use it daily, and putting 5 packets on gets time consuming
after each shower you take during the day. Plus, it's expensive, and I applied it to
arms and thighs as well, but being sexually active, it would transfer to a partner).

The shots worked wonderfully well. The doc gave me blood tests constantly because he was
a bit worried at first. (Even doctors are not immune to the "Test *causes* Prostate
cancer!" misinformation -- this General Practitioner of mine went to a seminar on
Hypogonadism before he found out that this is untrue.)

I also have a sleep disorder, by chance. Recent research had shown that Dopamine drugs
are effective. My doc started me out on one such med, but it made me sick. I told him
about a new drug, Mirapex, being used for sleep disorders... and also being used to cut
Prolactin levels.

We tried it. Almost immediately I noticed that I started experiencing random erections
throughout the day. Too much Test, my Doc told me (not so, we would later discover).

Before you ask yourself "why would he complain to his doc?" let me tell you about what I
experienced.

The erections I get are like I'm 15 again. I get erections at my desk at work not even
having sexual thoughts, and these aren't the 'slightly aroused' type, these are the
'stay seated at all costs and wait it out' type. Rock hard. This probably happens an
average of two or three times an hour when I take Mirapex every night. One could happen
while I'm, say, walking back to the car with groceries in my hands. No stimulation,
slightly aggravated state of mind from work, and BAM, in the space of a few seconds...
There have been times when I have stayed hard enough _after_ sex to continue having it,
and my wife is fine with that (as long as it's occasional, she jokes).

So the doc checked my Testosterone levels, and they were in the normal range of 500 to
700. He theorized that perhaps the Mirapex cuts down on Prolactin, allowing more
Testosterone in my blood to be bioavailable. I don't know, because my Total Test stays
sub-normal so I'm not so sure about his theory. But taking .125 of Mirapex every single
day, my bound levels are still low-normal... and I have zero problems with ED.

I don't expect that I'd be alone on having odd side effects. I see in some forums people
having sexual compulsions. In the product literature it even lists "unfounded
suspicions" as a possible side effect. I seriously doubt a doctor -- even a very
knowledgeable doctor -- would prescribe this for ED unless it is related to having too
high a Prolactin level.

I have been to see numerous (five) enbdocrinologists who have NO answer. To be fair,
most endocrinologists only know about 1) diabetes, and 2) hyperprolcatinemia in *women*.
One very prominent expert and an author of several studies of Estrogen in men (you read
that right) at the University Of Massachusetts Medical Center wanted me to stop taking
shots and start taking Viagra, Caffeine pills for the fatigue, and an antidepressant.
She gave this advice based on the fact that when I stopped taking the shots, my Test
went to 240, which is 20 points above normal (therefore, I don't need Test, right?
Riiiiiiiight.) No one - NOT A SINGLE MEDICAL EXPERT - can account for this effect of
Mirapex.

When I stop the drug, the random erections go away. When I take it every other day, they
decrease so that I still have some embarassing situations now and then when walking
around, for example, but still get a benefit for my sleep disorder. The only other side
effects I get are morning nausea (I feel like I have a REALLY bad hangover), and it
seems that my libido is now rather dramatically larger than it used to be. I can live
with these though.

I hope this helps someone...

Good to hear of this reaction you have to Mirapex. I have ben on
testosterone injections (weekly) for two years. I originally went
hypogonadnal about 5 or 6 years ago, and started getting all the tests when
i got to the point that I could *not* get an erection at all.

After going through many therapies, I found that the T injections, and an
occasional tadalifil give me the unexpected and sometimes rampant erections
that you describe.

I ain't complaining.

I think we all have our "magic mix" that works especially well for us, and
I'm happy you found yours.

If that works then you are probably in the minority where apomorphine will
also work well because your ED problem has something to do with the dopamine
system. At age 30 it would be very unlikely that you had a circulatory
problem(unless you are diabetic) and vasodilators like Viagra etc would not
be the first choice. Apomorphine is not effective orally and is used by
injection as an emetic to induce vomiting in the case of some poisoning and
also in cases of acute Parkinson's disease where the patient is put on a
drip(slowly). The only recently developed form that is effective, other than
by injection, is sublinqual and is sold under the trade name Uprima(not yet
available in the US). The dose of 3-4 mg will not cause nasea but higher
doses like 6mg will cause nasea in 10% of patients.

This might be misinterpreted by some. Actually, the warning doctors
should give is that testosterone supplements may cause prostate cancer
to show up in an individual receiving them, earlier than it would have
normally been detected. Apparently, cancer cells are present in the
person and the testosterone causes them to develop much faster. (This
is a layman's translation, of medical information) I know from
experience, as I developed prostate cancer came within a few years of
starting the procedure. The blood test for PSA levels is necessary and
wise if you are receiving testosterone supplements because the PSA
level, that should be tested for,is a signal that there may be
cancerous cells in the prostate or elsewhere.

Again, this happened to me and, yes, I did have cancer that was growing
rapidly. I had the prostate removed, but possibly still have some
cancer cells around if the PSA tests are a good indication. Right now I
cannot take testosterone supplements. The urologist and oncologist
treating me have told me that female hormones are used to help stop the
cancer when necessary. These destroy the testes ability to make
testoserone and bring the testosterone levels very low, from what I
understand. This hormone was given to me prior to the operation and was
very uncomfortable because it took away all sexual interests while
doing its job. I am hoping to avoid a repeat, but may not be able to
if the cancer recurs.
